Empty

Normally, when something is empty, it’s a bad thing. For example, I’m a huge Coke drinker. It’s always a sad experience when I get to the bottom of a can and need to throw it away. If you buy a movie and there wasn’t a DVD in the case, you wouldn’t be thrilled with that discovery. If your gas tank is empty, you’re going to be in for a long walk. Empty is usually not a good thing.

But one of the exceptions of this rule is Easter. Easter is the day when we celebrate emptiness.

He Is RisenJesus tomb didn’t start out empty. On Good Friday, Jesus died and He was put in the tomb. But because Jesus sacrificed Himself on the cross, He broke the power of death. With death’s power undone, the tomb simply couldn’t hold Him any longer. He rose to life that cannot end. He is alive. And that means that the tomb was empty, just as the women discovered on Easter morning.

And this is a good thing. Because Jesus’ tomb is empty, ours will be one day too.

Easter is all about empty. Thanks be to God. Hallelujah!
