Wordcount Wednesday

Oh, my goodness gracious. I’m so close. So very close. I can smell it. I can feel the finish line beckoning to me.

By my reckoning, I only have two and a half chapters to write in my current work-in-progress: the final two and then the chapter that I skipped (more on that in a bit).

So as of right now, “Mourning Dove” is clocking in at 123,193 words, meaning that I somehow managed to tack on 12,935 words over the past week. No idea how I managed that. But I can honestly say, I’m feeling the momentum. It’s gnawing at me, even now, to just keep writing. Just keep writing. Just keep writing, writing, writing.

Ah, man, now I have that song stuck in my head.

So why did I skip over one chapter? Because it’s the infamous “rap battle” chapter. Long story. Let me just put it this way: when I was working on the idea for this book, I realized that there had to be a battle of wits that would be similar to a rap battle. I’ve done a lot of research (as in, I’ve listened to a bunch of rap battles), but when I got to that chapter in my manuscript, I didn’t feel confident in writing it. Technically, I still don’t, but I have a good idea of what needs to happen and how it will go, so in a day or two, I’ll try my hand at it and see what happens. If it doesn’t work, I may have to reach out to the rap battle community in Kansas City and see if they can help me figure things out.

But we’re almost there. So. Very. Close.
