Wordcount Wednesday

Well, what a week! I’m starting to feel the momentum build. I don’t know why it took me so long to get to my story’s “halfway point,” but it felt like I would never get there. But now that I’ve reached it, it feels like the story is just pouring out of me. I’m almost to the so-called “eighty percent point” and might be there before the end of the week. Maybe. We’ll have to see. I’m even thinking that I might be able to wrap this thing up in two weeks or so. Maybe a little longer. End of the month, tops.

So what did I get down on “paper” this week? I wrote 12,562 words, bringing my grand total to 102,564 words. It’s technically over my original target of 100,000 words, but given how quickly the story is coming together now, I’m thinking I won’t have to go too far over my original target.

A few interesting things. Okay, maybe not all that interesting to someone else, but I find it interesting:

  1. I did a first this week. I skipped a chapter. I realized I wasn’t ready to write it yet, so I skipped over it and wrote the next one. I’ll have to go back and fill in the blanks at some point. I’m debating whether or not I need to do some research before I actually write that skipped chapter. I think I may need to talk to someone who does rap battles. For my fantasy story. Seriously.
  2. I had a slightly heart-stopping moment this morning. Last night, right before I went to bed, I finally hit on a way to weave in some of the essential backstory in a way that wouldn’t be just an infodump. But I was literally getting into bed and very tired, so I wasn’t about to get up and write it down. I figured I could remember it. I almost didn’t remember in the morning. Thankfully, I did. Okay, this anecdote sounded a lot more interesting in my head.

So there we go. I’m starting to think that I might be sneaking into the homestretch. Strap in, folks, it’s going to be a fun ride.
