Well, I kind of suspected this week wasn’t going to be all that great.
Last Wednesday, I hit a milestone in my work-in-progress. I hit the “halfway point” in the story (well, that’s what I consider it. Upon further reflection, it may be more of a 60% point or so; I’ve structured the story as a “five act” sort of thing, and the halfway point was the end of Act III). This was a milestone I had been hoping to hit for a while now, but it always seemed just out of reach. Every time I thought I was making progress, the further away it seemed. But last Wednesday, I hit it and was able to move on to Act IV and start the run for the end.
Small problem, though: while I knew what had to happen in the story, I wasn’t sure what order the scenes would come in. I had some vague ideas, but I wasn’t confident enough in my plans to really dive right in.
So after last week, I thought I would take a day or two off and sketch some stuff out on paper. I figured I’d need at least a couple of days to really suss through all the scenes, ideas, and so on.
Yeah, it only took a day. Turns out, the mental list of scenes I had been compiling over the past few weeks was already in the right order. The moment I jotted them all down on paper, I realized, That looks about right and I dove right back into it.
Even with only a minor break, I still didn’t get a whole lot done. Even though the brainstorming took a short period, there were family outings to be had. And I got to meet one of my personal heroes on Saturday:
So where am I? As of right now, I’m at 90,002 words, meaning I wrote 5,810 words over this last week. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep up the momentum in the coming days.
I’m kind of hoping that I’ll be able to finish this whole thing by the end of November. After all, December is kind of a busy month for someone with my day job. It’d be nice to know that this thing is in the can before I have to abandon it in favor of Christmas stuff. Will I make it? I kind of doubt it. But it’ll be fun to see.
