Ugh. It would appear that I done lost my mojo.
Remember how, two weeks ago, I reported that I had lost my momentum? Yeah…it kind of never came back. I’m not entirely sure why that is. For some reason, the schedule I had worked out to let me rack up some good numbers hasn’t worked that well for the past week and a half. Plus I hit a pretty bad case of writers’ block. And…well, more excuses.
Whatever the reason, I haven’t done that well. In the past two weeks, I’ve only written 6,180 words, bringing my grand total up to 47,844 words. I know that 6k+ words looks pretty cool, but I had kind of set a goal for myself to write almost twice that many every week. So yeah, not feeling too good about myself right now.
But it’s not all doom and gloom in spite of my dismal numbers. I think I’ve pushed past the block and, while the scene is still giving me some fits, I should get it down in a very rough form and be able to keep writing. I am a little worried about how long this book is getting. Plot-wise, I think I’m about a third of the way through the story, but I’m quickly approaching what should be the halfway point. Editing should smooth some of that over.
And I have been keeping up with the #WIPJoy content on Twitter. Maybe you’ve seen it. Maybe you missed it. Either way, here are the entries from the past two weeks:
#WIPJoy | Day 15 So what does my main character, Piper, think of me? pic.twitter.com/chXmCCOCpp

#WIPJoy | Day 16 Does Piper, my main character, have any words for her future fans? pic.twitter.com/Q2ciwMVqJc
— John Otte (@JohnWOtte) September 16, 2016
#WIPJoy | Day 17 Does my protagonist make faces at herself in the mirror? pic.twitter.com/GihA3hwH24
— John Otte (@JohnWOtte) September 17, 2016
#WIPJoy | Day 18 I don’t actually have a line from my WIP that sums up the theme. Or even hints at it. May have to work that in somehow.
— John Otte (@JohnWOtte) September 18, 2016
#WIPjoy | Day 19 Why am I writing my WIP? Because I want to get this story out of my head. It’s crowded enough in there as it is.
— John Otte (@JohnWOtte) September 19, 2016
#WIPJoy | Day 20 What kind of reader needs to read my story? One who wants to change the world but isn’t a warrior in the usual sense.
— John Otte (@JohnWOtte) September 20, 2016
#WIPJoy | Day 21 – What’s the biggest challenge with this WIP? I need to pack in lots of backstory or the ending won’t make sense.
— John Otte (@JohnWOtte) September 21, 2016
#WIPJoy | Day 22 – What one picture sums up my story? I used it once already, but I can’t think of a better one. pic.twitter.com/9t6fwsH0zr
— John Otte (@JohnWOtte) September 22, 2016
#WIPJoy | Day 23 What makes my WIP unique? That I’m writing it. Nothing new under the sun, folks, except the voice of the one telling it.
— John Otte (@JohnWOtte) September 23, 2016
#WIPJoy Day 24 I should share a line that shows my voice. Seeing as I’m deep in my first draft, everything I’ve written is garbage. 😛
— John Otte (@JohnWOtte) September 24, 2016
Just for @scyian, I’ll redo #WIPJoy Day 24. Not sure if this is the best example of my voice, but I kind of like it… pic.twitter.com/okcxMLIU9o
— John Otte (@JohnWOtte) September 25, 2016
#WIPJoy | Day 25 If I could mash up my story with another? I’d probably choose @scottlynch78‘s Locke Lamora stories. Lots of great wit.
— John Otte (@JohnWOtte) September 25, 2016
#WIPJoy | Day 26 Who’s encouraging me in writing this story? Two people: My long-suffering agent, @amandaluedeke, and my friend @clkuehl.
— John Otte (@JohnWOtte) September 26, 2016
#WIPJoy | Day 27 Are there any inside jokes in my current WIP? Not right now, but I’m planning on slipping in a few more in the 2nd draft.
— John Otte (@JohnWOtte) September 27, 2016
#WIPJoy | Day 28 Share a line that hits right in the feels? This time, I know I don’t have one. Not yet, anyway. Second draft stuff.
— John Otte (@JohnWOtte) September 28, 2016
Good article. I’ll be praying for your writing. My writing? My momentum ended when the Republicans took over the Senate in 2014. Maybe before that even. (Actually, I don’t know if I did any writing since the beginning of ’14.)
By the way, let me give a definition of writer’s block I heard: It’s when your imaginary friends won’t talk to you.
