The Hive Is Here!

The time has come, ladies and gentlemen! Today is the day. The Hive is free and in the wild!

The Hive Official CoverTo be quite honest, this was a day that I didn’t think would get here.

I don’t exactly remember when it was that I first started writing The Hive. I know it was after I wrote Numb (obviously, since this is a pseudo-sequel to that book), but I’m not sure if it was before or after I sold that to then-Marcher Lord Press. I’m about 99.9% certain I wrote it after I sold Failstate. I was intending for The Hive to be a YA sci fi adventure. When I showed it to my long-suffering agent, she pointed out that it was kind of missing some essential features of a true YA story. We had a long talk about those missing elements and I jotted down some notes about how to fix things. The way we saw it, I’d have to blast the beginning of the story down to bedrock and start over again.

But then I signed a contract to do the other two Failstate books and I had to put The Hive on the shelf. And as I kept working on those books, the more I started to suspect that The Hive might never see the light of day. And I was okay with that, for the most part.

Then Numb finaled for the Christy Awards, creating an interesting conundrum for me. You can read about it over at Speculative Faith.

Well, Steve Laube, our fearless leader at Enclave Publishing, read that post and we had an e-mail conversation back and forth about it. In the midst of that conversation, I mentioned that I had this book that had been sitting on my shelf. I told him a little about it (using my stock description: “pregnant teenage cyborg”). Steve almost instantly pictured the cover you see here.

And the rest is history.

And now here we are. The book is here. I hope you enjoy it.

But as good as the news is today, there is one small fly in the ointment. I found out last night that, due to a problem at the printer, the paperback version of The Hive will be delayed by a few days. But the Kindle version is available right now! Go go go!
